I am currently working on a collaboration with skate brand Wai Clothing based in Exeter. I was set the brief of designing two prints for them, one using their logo and one around a Hawaiian theme, that will be used to make mens shirts.
For the logo design I created a simple repeat pattern in two colour ways experimenting the size of the print as well as the thickness of the logo. My client ended up loving both designs so we are currently working on a way to incorporate both of these onto one shirt.
For the Hawaiian inspired design I asked my client what they thought of when they thought of Hawaii and found they mainly thought of natured focused things such as Hawaii's active volcano Mount Loa and surfing. As my client has tattoos of both a shark and turtle I decided to incorporate these animals into the design, adding the hibiscus flower for a splash of colour as it is native to Hawaii, Mount Loa as well as a surfer. I first made these into a print tile which I then repeated filling in any gaps with more flowers and also adding a surfboard too.
My client loved this design and after a couple of changes to the background colour we settled on the finished print you can see below which. We are currently in the stages of deciding the placement for the print on the shirt, working out the scale of the design and deciding whether to use block colours for the shirt collar and pocket to break up the busy print.
